Who We Are

Village Health Works is a rapidly growing grassroots nonprofit organization that provides quality, compassionate health care in a dignified environment in rural Burundi, East  Africa. We have built the only modern health center in the region, providing services where there were none. Village Health Works strives to be a model center of excellence dedicated to building a healthier and more just, peaceful, and prosperous society in Burundi and beyond. Our campus has become a beacon of transformation and hope in a country that continues to suffer.

Village Health Works was born out of remembrance of a personal journey, compassion for the pain of others, and an old childhood dream that became a reality in 2007. You can learn more about our history, and that of our founder, Deogratias Niyizonkiza, by clicking on the following links: Our Journey and Deo's Story.

We are a community of people in Burundi and around the world who share the belief that everyone, especially those most impoverished, deserve quality health care and opportunities for success. The shared passion of our supporters for Village Health Works’ vision makes our work possible.

Our leadership teams in the US and Burundi help drive our efforts, but they are only a small fraction of those behind our work. Our boards of committed, distinguished individuals offer their expertise in public health, education, finance, and nonprofit management. Most importantly, our  288 paid staff members in Burundi—including 150 community development workers and 130 full-time staff—are critical to our work, and serve as the bridge between our programs and neighboring communities.
